On May 20, iconic singer Lee Hyori took a nostalgic trip down memory lane as she publicly expressed her longing for SPICA, the girl group she once nurtured.
Through her Instagram Story, Lee Hyori shared two group photos of SPICA alongside the caption, “Suddenly, I miss you.” The images appear to be album concept photos featuring all five members striking poses, sparking heartfelt memories among longtime fans.
Formed in 2012, SPICA was a five-member group that Lee Hyori personally mentored and helped produce. Each member possessed powerhouse vocal abilities—arguably all of main vocal caliber. However, despite their talents, the group struggled to gain mainstream recognition.
Rather than showcasing each member’s individual strengths, SPICA often released songs in a bright, clear vocal style that failed to fully utilize their vocal range. Compounded by inconsistent album concepts and a lack of a solid group identity, their popularity dwindled, and they eventually faded from the spotlight. After a lengthy hiatus, SPICA unofficially disbanded.
This recent post marks a rare public mention by Lee Hyori, who referred to the group as her “five daughters”, a nod to her deep emotional investment in their careers.
Since marrying singer-songwriter Lee Sang Soon in 2013, Lee Hyori had been living a quiet life in Jeju Island for over a decade. In late 2024, she returned to Seoul, settling in Pyeongchang-dong.
Fans and followers of both Lee Hyori and SPICA are now left wondering if this spontaneous outpouring of sentiment could signal a possible reunion or tribute in the future.
